Tony Moulam

Tony Moulam at the cairn on Bloodybush Edge

We have just heard from Tony’s daughter Clare that her father passed away on Friday 29th October. We offer condolences to Clare, the family and friends.

Tony (A J J) Moulam joined the club in 1947 (74 years a member!) and was our President from 1969-72. He produced a number of guidebooks and was also a Custodian of Cwm Glas Mawr and Helyg. He wrote a number of articles for the CC Journal.

Member Richard Huddy who climbed with Tony wrote this to the Times following their obituary of Tony:

”Your excellent obituary (15:01:2022) distills the essence of this most modest mountaineer. In particular, you drew attention to his remarkable memory for grooves and holds. Watching him climb was a lesson in preparation. He would stand at the foot of a route patiently assessing the difficulties; then he would venture a few holds, and return to the start. This was repeated going further each time. Finally he would complete the pitch in one balletic stride, like a gazelle floating over rough ground. Among an elite number of great rock climbers, he was one of them. Climbing with him was much more than a good day Out.”

Sad news. I met and climbed with Tony back in the late 70s when he was writing a guide to Dartmoor for West Col. We revisited many of the tors and crags he had climbed on in the 50s. A great raconteur and good companion on and off the rocks. Condolences to his family.

I thought people would like to hear that Tony Moulam kindly left a legacy to the Club. I was pleased to receive a cheque for £20,000 a couple of days before Christmas. I believe his preference was for it to be spent on Helyg.
