  • Range East open? TICK!
  • Bird Bans finished? TICK!
  • Tides right? TICK!

Well, off to Pembroke it is then!

We arrived at the meet on Saturday to find a hut full of disconsolate climbers, fed up and bored after a day of heavy rain. Luckily for us, that evening, a joint gathering with members of the Pinnacle Club livened things up, helped by the valiant efforts of those brave souls who persevered with the barbeque under the shelter of a precarious looking tarp.

The weather for the rest of the week was overcast, but mainly dry, allowing plenty of adventurous routes at Stennis Head, Mowing Word, Saddle Head, Northern Pembroke and Crickmail. The arrival of Scott and Tom reduced the average age of the meet by 50% and the average grade climbed by 50%, with a particularly memorable ascent of Preposterous tales, done as an ‘easy’ last minute route, starting at 5pm, without head torches, with the misguided idea of using a ‘good’ style. The lads were finally collected from the car park at 10pm, hair sticking wildly out at all angles, limbs heavy, eyes staring emptily into the distance after their black and slimy ascension.

A couple of birthdays during the week were a good excuse for some cake and a meal at the St. Govan’s, finishing off a really great meet. I’m already looking forward to booking my place early for next year!

That Preposterous tales catches a lot of people out. Once got someone out of there with a dislocated shoulder which was interesting! In a very big sea, the exit becomes a giant blowhole, jetting a column of water 30m high. Great adventure!
