HELYG
In the heart of the Ogwen Valley with superb views of Tryfan, Helyg is steeped in the history of British climbing. It was our first climbing hut and was used as a base by the great pioneers of Welsh climbing in the 1920s and 30s, later it was used as a training base for the 1953 Everest expedition. The Hut is preserved in as near to its original form as possible to retain the authentic atmosphere of those early times, this has included not evicting the resident ghost! In recognition of its importance the hut was listed as a building of special historic importance in 2017.

Work started on Monday 2nd Dec to do the following - hut will remain open while the work is ongoing
- replace downpipes and gutters
- install french drain around the kitchen
- replace the gate and improve the access from A5 - the contractors have started digging around this area; it is very very muddy! As it is now a work zone, normal Health and Safety rules apply for such work areas and members should not use this access route. Instead please use the gate above the hut. The contractors are using the kitchen as a rest area through the work but will clean before finishing on Fridays. They will also leave their tools in the Garage overnights and at weekends, so please leave things as you find them.
Water Supply: Please be aware that the water is from a private borehole.
When closing the car park barrier key safe please do not slam the box door because this can loosen the batteries. You can avoid slamming by using your fob again if necessary. In the event of a power cut, contact Manweb Scottish Power and advise the Custodian. Take all recycling away with you. Put rubbish in the large wheelie bin by the car park barrier. All rubbish must be contained in a black bag, no loose litter.
The hut and parking areas are on opposite sides of the A5 about 2.5 miles from Capel Curig. The parking area is located on the north side of the road about 2.5 miles from Capel Curig. The Hut is accessed a further 75m west towards Llyn Ogwen on the south side of the A5, through an iron kissing gate. Please exercise due caution moving between the parking and hut, especially at night.
