GRANGE OLD SCHOOL

Grange, Borrowdale CA12 5UQ
Grid ref: NY 25089 17528
Custodian: Martin Young
Grange old school hut from the road

This quirky building is our most recently acquired hut. The School was built around 1890 and the last classes were held in 1935. Since closing as a school the building has been used for various community purposes; it is owned by the local church and we took over the lease in 2008. Built of local stone with a fine Lakeland slate roof the bell still hangs on the gable end wall perhaps ready to summon climbers back from the crags rather than the kids to lessons. It is within walking distance of Shepherd's Crag, Black Crag and many other Borrowdale crags. Grange has a BBQ and 4 camping chairs, please bring your own fuel.
