LUNDY 2008 DIGITAL

Lying off the North Devon coast Lundy is a superb place to climb but a trip needs advance planning as annual nesting restrictions close many of the crags in the spring, accommodation is at a premium and the ferry does not run every day. There is a strong feeling of isolation on the island, if you make the effort to visit you are certain to have a great time.

The west coast of the island is very rugged with many fine granite crags and there is a magnificent collection of adventurous routes, perhaps the most famous route is the impressive Devil’s Slide (HS) but if you spend a week here you will barely scratch the surface and are sure to want to return. One particularly memorable feature of climbing on Lundy is the approaches to many of the crags, taking a 100m static abseil rope is advisable.

Bird Restrictions - the notes on bird restrictions (guidebook pg 20 & 21) do not reflect the current position that now runs from 1 March to 15 September. Climbers are strongly advised to carefully consult BMC RAD -Lundy for information and approach the warden by email close to your visit or in person when on the Island.

Abseil stakes are NOT to be placed on the grass slope above the descents. Lundy is an SSSI and the approaches to all the cliffs on the island can be safeguarded with enough rope and common sense. If we are to continue enjoying the very good relationship we have with Lundy and the Landmark Trust then climbers are requested not place any further stakes or leave unnecessary abseil slings in place.
