Great Gable and Pillar Rock are the homes of English rock climbing: Pillar Rock was first climbed in 1826 and the summit can only be reached by climbing while Haskett-Smith's amazing solo first ascent of Napes Needle in June 1886 is widely credited as being the birth of English rock climbing. Today these crags are home to hundreds of classic routes, the vast majority being multi-pitch and many are in the mid and lower grades although there are some modern desperate test-pieces. You do need to stretch your legs to get to these crags but the rewards for doing so are immeasurable.

This guide provides all you need to know for a great day out in superb mountain settings, clear maps and approach details, detailed colour photodiagrams and well written descriptions make finding and following your chosen adventure a doddle; also included are a great set of colour action shots (they really do make you want to go a climb up there despite the walk!), some nice historical black and white shots and a comprehensive history
